Department of Anesthesiology – Professional Training Programs – Critical Care Anesthesia Program - New York City – Montefiore Medical Center
The Transplant Anesthesia division and the Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation provide residents with a unique opportunity to work on a variety of cases involving pediatric and adult kidney and liver transplants, combined liver-kidney transplants and pancreas-kidney transplants. The Center for Transplantation at Montefiore is proud to serve the local community in addition to providing national and international education and training. Montefiore’s Liver Transplant Program has reached the best one-year post-liver transplant survival rate in the country, according to Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) data.
Clinical Excellence, Extraordinary Opportunity
As part of their transplant anesthesia training, residents learn in-depth anesthetic techniques for liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation as well as for hepatobiliary surgery. During their rotation, residents are involved in perioperative care and pain management for transplant patients. By being exposed to this range of complex cases, our trainees complete their residency with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively provide anesthesia services for transplant and complex abdominal cases. Working closely with our Transplant Anesthesiologists, our residents have an opportunity to be involved in multiple research projects related to transplantation.
The faculty members who comprise our Transplant Anesthesia division are highly experienced and well trained in the subspecialty. They are members of national and international transplant committees and work groups. Our attending anesthesiologists work directly with residents, providing mentorship and comprehensive training in the subspecialty to ensure their success after graduation. In addition to training our residents, our faculty also participate in international education programs and welcome residents and junior attendings from Chile, who come to Montefiore to gain knowledge and skills in transplant anesthesiology.
Didactic and Research Curriculum
The Transplant Anesthesia team works closely with residents on developing research skills and conducting scientific projects. Residents are encouraged to collaborate with our faculty on research in the area of abdominal organ transplantation, expanding their knowledge of the subspecialty beyond the operating room. In addition, residents will have the opportunity to work with our Transplant Surgery Department colleagues on multicenter clinical trials with a focus on organ preservation and machine perfusion.
