Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Introduction

The Montefiore Einstein Department of Anesthesiology is proud to introduce its new Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) Fellowship Program, which became ACGME-accredited in September 2023. The ACCM Fellowship was designed by our Critical Care Anesthesiology faculty with a specific focus on training the next generation of Critical Care physicians to provide exemplary, evidence-based and integrated care to our sickest patients.

Clinical Experience

The ACCM Fellowship will be a well-rounded year of varied clinical training at both Montefiore Einstein and nearby Jacobi Hospital. The fellow will rotate through the Surgical ICU, the Cardiothoracic ICU, the Jacobi Trauma and Burn ICU, as well as several medical ICUs in collaboration with the Pulmonary Critical Care Division. With our focus on integrated care, the fellow will have the opportunity to learn not only from Anesthesiology faculty, but also from our Department of Medicine and Department of Surgery colleagues.

Educational Experience

The ACCM fellow will engage in educational activities including teaching residents on their Critical Care Rotation. The fellowship program will include monthly journal club sessions, biweekly POCUS rounds and monthly morbidity and mortality conferences. The fellow will learn from our Critical Care Anesthesiology Division faculty, who are all fellowship trained in Critical Care Medicine. In addition, many of our faculty have additional specialized training in other sub-specialties including Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Transplant Anesthesiology. We will host lectures and discussions with our colleagues in the departments of Surgery and Medicine to foster interdepartmental learning and promote a culture of collaboration among all Critical Care colleagues.

Research Opportunities

Our Critical Care Anesthesiology faculty are involved in multiple, multicenter randomized controlled clinical trials on topics including delirium prevention, sedation, insomnia treatment, and early mobilization for critically ill patients. Our ACCM fellow will have the opportunity to work with faculty on these clinical trials and will also be encouraged to pursue their individual research interests. The fellow will have the support of the Anesthesiology Digital Health Research Lab – a team of statisticians, data analysts, and clinician-researchers that focuses on extensive perioperative and surgical ICU retrospective cohort datasets that are utilized in a range of research projects. The Digital Health team has published research on a range of topics including neuromuscular blocking agents in mechanically ventilated patients, post-operative pulmonary complications, and early mobilization in the ICU.
