Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at Montefiore Medical Center is proud to offer an ACGME accredited fellowship.  Our division provides care for over 1,000 cardiothoracic cases a year with a wide range of procedures.  This diverse complement of cases provides our fellows with exposure to state-of- the- art care for patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgery.  Our case mix includes:

  • Atrial fibrillation surgery: The Maze Procedure
  • Aortic valve-sparing surgery
  • Aneurysm surgery
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)
  • Mitral valve repair and replacement
  • Aortic valve repair and replacement
  • Ventricular reconstruction
  • Adult congenital procedures
  • Pediatric heart surgery
  • Heart transplant
  • Mechanical heart devices:
    • Bridge to transplant
    • Bridge to recovery
    • Destination therapy

This fellowship is designed to provide training in the perioperative care of patients undergoing all types of cardiac and thoracic procedures. During the fellowship year, there is significant exposure to research and participation at national meetings.  We offer extensive didactics in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) which includes the use of TEE simulation. In addition, we provide exposure to 3D TEE affording the fellow maximal contact to the latest technology available for the care of cardiac patients. Fellows will become proficient in the perioperative evaluation, management, and follow-up of complex cardiothoracic patients. At the conclusion of their fellowship, they will be able to act as expert consultants to our surgical and medical colleagues and teach the concepts to residents.

We currently offer 3 ACGME accredited fellowship positions available per year. The cardiothoracic fellowship is a 12 month program with interviews conducted approximately 18 months prior to start date of fellowship. The decision process is usually finalized by the first week of July the year prior to the start of fellowship.
