Scope of Services

Our inpatient Rehabilitation unit accepts adult patients beginning from age 18. We do not provide inpatient pediatric rehabilitation services. Services are delivered in the hospital setting where patients stay overnight until they are ready for discharge.

Therapy services are provided daily between the hours of 8am – 6pm. Medical oversight and care is provided as needed 24 hours a day 365 days of the year.

Our facility is part of the non-profit Montefiore Health System and receives funding from State and Federal sources. Montefiore accepts many types of insurance including Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, Managed Medicare, Managed Medicaid, Worker’s Compensation and No Fault as well as private insurance plans.

Our medical and therapy fees are paid for by the insurance companies of our patients. We do not charge patients or their families additional fees for medical and therapy services provided.

Patients are referred to Montefiore Inpatient Rehabilitation from Physicians both within and outside the Montefiore Health System.

Therapy is provided to reduce impairments and activity limitations. Helping patients to dress, eat, take care of their needs and move more safely is a goal of Acute Rehabilitation. Although everyone is different many of our patients have the following Impairments which our therapists are trained to evaluate and treat:

  • Decreased Independence in Upper and Lower extremity dressing
  • Difficulty with eating, drinking
  • Communication impairments
  • Getting in and out of beds, chairs, bathrooms and showers safely
  • Walking, driving and moving around the community using the right device for safety
  • Challenges with fine motor activities such as writing, buttoning clothes and using a toothbrush

A Social Work assessment begins at time of admission with ongoing contact throughout the entire rehabilitation stay. This includes many aspects of the Social Determinants of Health.

The focus of Social Services is to prepare the patient and Caregivers for a safe discharge. Discharge planning begins upon admission and patients are regularly informed of their anticipated discharge date in advance to allow caregivers time to prepare for return to home or another appropriate medical facility if needed. Every effort is made to assess conditions and life situations that can interfere with patient’s ability to participate with therapy services while receiving care or following discharge.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit also provides neuropsychologist services to help patients adjusting to new impairments and disabilities and teach techniques and skills to better prepare patients prior to returning home.

Psychological well-being of all patients at Montefiore is a top-priority for our staff. Patients are screened for depression and anxiety upon admission. When appropriate referral to mental health professional is provided either during hospitalization through consultation or referral to an appropriate outpatient program.
