Menopause Treatment and Research

This center offers comprehensive medical, preventive, and gynecologic care for perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. The center's nurses provide education and discussion groups for patients regarding estrogen replacement therapy and osteoporosis. The DEXA bone densitometer for detecting developing osteoporosis which is housed here also serves as a resource for many pharmacological studies and interdisciplinary initiatives. Recently, it facilitated collaboration with the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in a clinical study to evaluate bone mineral density and total body calcium in association with prolonged Depo-Provera use in adolescent females.

This center was established by Dr. Ruth Freeman, and Dr. Nanette Santoro who joined the center from the University of Medicine and Dentistry at New Jersey in 1999. She has extensive clinical experience as well as major interest in clinical and translational research activities. Dr. Ruth Freeman and the technicians are certified to perform and interpret Bone Density studies by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry.
