Special Features
Medical Simulation
The Institute for Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning (IMSAL) serves the entire 11 hospital system of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC). IMSAL provides simulation-based education, with the goal of advancing system-wide patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
IMSAL currently offers courses in:
- Central line placement and maintenance skills
- Basic and advanced airway skills
- Cardiac code team
- Shoulder dystocia management
The simulation center houses six simulation rooms replicating:
- Operating, intensive care and emergency rooms
- Four patient exam rooms
- A clinical skills room
- Three debriefing/conference rooms
- Three control rooms
Cutting-edge simulation equipment includes a family of high-fidelity patient mannequins and an array of virtual reality and part-task trainers.
The facility also offers standardized patient actors and a state-of-the-art digital audiovisual system to capture and transmit simulations for debriefing and assessment, video conferencing and remote participation.
Hyperbaric Medicine
Jacobi Medical Center has the only walk-in hyperbaric chamber in the tri-state area and is the NYC referral center for the Divers Alert Network.
While rotating there, our residents gain experience in the treatment of decompression sickness and arterial gas emboli. This unique resource also allows clinicians to use hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy to treat:
- Nonhealing ulcers
- Radiation tissue injury
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Cyanide poisoning
- Severe clostridial infections
Snakebite Treatment
Our residents also benefit from the fact that Jacobi Medical Center serves as the only Snakebite Treatment Center in the tri-state area. Jacobi cares for five to 10 patients a year who have snakebite injuries serious enough to merit treatment with anti-venom.
Online Education
Residents have the opportunity to be contributors and editors of the program's educational site (emrounds.org), which serves as a platform for review material covered within our conference and follow-up rounds. High-yield articles as well as highlighted lectures from conference form the core of our site's content. EMRounds also functions as the hub for our module-based curriculum, consisting of traditional resources, video lectures, pertinent articles, and relevant online resources.
Mentoring Program
The prestigious faculty at Montefiore and Jacobi offer a broad and deep palette of clinical experience and skills from which our residents can gain tremendous hands-on guidance and expertise. Based on your particular clinical interests, you will be assigned mentors who spend time with you and provide advice in their clinical fields.
