Tuition

Q:  How can I pay the tuition?
A:  The tuition must be paid by a certified check or money order payable to Montefiore Medical Center.

Q:  Where can I pay the tuition?
A:  You may mail the tuition with the application to: Montefiore Learning Network, 111 East 210 Street, Bronx, NY 10467.

Q:  Is there a payment plan available?
A:  Unfortunately, we can only accept full payments for the tuition.

Q:  I am a Montefiore employee.  Do I have to pay for this course?
A:  Yes, but your tuition may be reimbursable by you union.  Please check with them.  All Montefiore employees may deduct the BCLS fee from the cost of the tuition.  Please include a copy of your Montefiore ID card with your application.

Q:  I already have the EMT Original course textbook.  Do I need to purchase it again?
A:  No. As long as you have all the required books, you may deduct the amount listed for the textbooks from the tuition.  All students are free to purchase the textbooks on their own.  They must show the books to the instructor to ensure they are the correct version.

Q:  I already have CPR.  Do I need to pay the BCLS fee?
A:  Yes.  New York State requires we conduct CPR testing as part of the course.  Please refer to https://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/pdf/06-02.pdf .

Q:  I am a member of an EMS Agency.  What do I need to submit and what do I have to pay?
A:  You must submit an agency verification form with original signatures in ink.  The form can be found at https://www.health.state.ny.us/forms/doh-3312.pdf .  You will need to pay for BCLS certification and textbooks, if you wish to purchase them through Montefiore.

Textbooks & Materials

Q:  What are the required textbooks for the original course?
A:  AAOS’s Emergency Care & Transportation of the Sick & Injured, Premier 11th Edition, Jones & Bartlett.  It must include the workbook and online access.

Q:  Is there an advantage to purchasing the textbooks as part of the course tuition?
A:  Montefiore purchases the textbook in bulk.  The price we charge is extremely competitive.  You will have the right materials on the first day of class.  You may choose to purchase the materials elsewhere but please ensure you purchase the correct items.  The books must be presented to the course instructor and must have your name written on all of them.

Q: Are there any other materials needed for the course?
A:  You will be required to supply the following items for the course: a watch with a second-hand, blue or black ink pen, a least one 3” binder for materials and #2 pencils are required for written exams.  You will also need a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff), stethoscope, protective goggles, penlight (reusable or disposable) and a pocketmask w/ oxygen outlet.  Students will have the opportunity to purchase the necessary medical supplies through low-cost group purchasing.

Eligibility

Q:  How old do I have to be to take the course?
A:  Candidates must be 17 years of age by the end of the month in which their NYS written certification is scheduled.

Q:  Is there any upper age limit?
A:  No, as long as you can perform all the essential functions of an EMT you will be able to complete the course.  Please refer to https://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/pdf/srgemt.pdffor the essential functions of an EMT.

Q:  Are there any accommodations for a student with disabilities?
A:  New York State allows limited accommodations for students with disabilities but these accommodations cannot interfere with providing care.  Please refer to https://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/pdf/srgemt.pdf for the essential functions of an EMT.

Q:  What immunizations do I need to take the course?
A:  All original EMT Students born after January 1, 1957 must provide the course instructor with proof of current immunizations for Measles, Mumps & Rubella.  Students must have documentation of a negative PPD test or chest X-ray for Tuberculosis received within the prior 12 months of performing the rotations.  In addition, all original EMT Students must provide the course instructor with proof of immunization for Hepatitis B.  Students not wishing to be immunized for Hepatitis B, may sign a declination statement in lieu of vaccination. If you are completing your clinical rotations during the time the Commissioner of Health deem the flu prevalent in New York State, you must either provide documentation of receiving a flu vaccination for the current flu season or wear a mask.  Students will be afforded the opportunity of receiving a free flu vaccination through Montefiore.

Q:  Do I need the proof of immunizations on the first night?
A:  No, you do not these the first night but experience has shown us that it takes a while to find these records.  We suggest that you start collecting the required information as soon as possible.

Q:  I have a criminal conviction.  Can I still take this course?
A:  New York State does not prevent you from taking this course; however, they may prevent you from becoming certified.  Every criminal conviction must be reviewed by them.  Please refer to https://www.health.ny.gov/professionals/ems/policy/15-04.htm.

Q:  How long is the course?
A:  The course is approximately 5 1/2 months in length.  We meet every Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 PM until 10 PM except for major holidays.
