Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program - Research and Clinical Trials - New York City - Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantion
The Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore is an internationally recognized leader in kidney transplantation research, dedicated to improving patients' diagnosis and treatment. Ira Greifer, MD, established the International Pediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA), which includes nearly 1,500 members from 89 countries, to disseminate knowledge and findings about childhood kidney diseases all over the globe.
Our physicians have contributed scholarly work in countless textbooks and medical journals, and we receive substantial funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to analyze the genesis of various kidney diseases and develop advancements in the field. Our pediatric nephrology training program, funded for the past 32 years through a grant from the NIH, treats children with kidney disease as part of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and The Children's Hospital at Montefiore.
Currently, we participate in two NIH-funded clinical trials to better understand chronic kidney disease, and its prevention, in children. One clinical trial focuses on high blood pressure and obesity; the other is a study on focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), also known as focal glomerular sclerosis, which is a common form of kidney disease that can cause permanent kidney failure in children.
We also participate in various community outreach efforts, including our summer YMCA camp for kids and the launch of a regional support group for families and patients with the Pediatric Kidney and Urology Foundation of New York. We also offer excellent research opportunities for students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and continuously promote pediatric nephrology as a critical field for the future of our children's health.
