Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Support
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes is a recognized American Diabetes Association “Diabetes Education Program” and is ranked among the top diabetes programs in the United States by US News and World Report. The Division’s mission is to improve the overall health and well-being of children with diabetes and endocrine disorders. The Division’s clinical focus is care for infants and children with endocrine disorders, and Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The Division specializes in the treatment of:
- Adrenal function disorders (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia and Addison's Disease)
- Calcium and Bone Disorders
- Delayed Puberty
- Diabetes Mellitus - Types 1 and Type 2
- Disorders of Sex Development Program
- Growth Disorders
- Hirsutism, androgen excess, menstrual abnormalities
- Hypoglycemia
- Klinefelter syndrome, Prader Willi syndrome, and Turner syndrome
- Thyroid disorders
Each year the Division conducts a number of studies to develop new protocols to treat our pediatric and adolescent patients. Recent research has looked at the artificial pancreas, eating breakfast and its influence on brain function, nutrition education in groups versus individual settings, self-esteem and even literacy factors. The goal of research is to see what can be done to help them live fuller, more productive lives.
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology also conducts a number of educational programs and activities within the community:
School Nurse Educational Program
The division meets several times a year with local school nurses to educate them on diabetes and diabetes management in the school setting. One session in 2016 was hosted for over 200 nurses from the New York City School system.
Lucky Strike Bowling Event
The Division hosted an inaugural bowling event in May 2016 at Lucky Strike in Manhattan. More than 30 adolescent diabetes patients attended and participated in ice breakers, a Q & A and educational session, lunch and lots of bowling.
Family Diabetes Day at the Bronx Zoo
This annual event was held in August 2016. More than 150 pediatric diabetes patients enjoyed arts and crafts, face-painting, educational activities and heard from special guest Sierra Sandison, who was Miss Idaho 2014. Ms. Sandison made a name for herself when she walked across the pageant stage wearing her insulin pump, and spoke to the children about growing up with diabetes.
Halloween Candy Exchange
This upcoming annual event will be held in November 2016. The Division invites more than 200 pediatric diabetes patients and their siblings to come with their candy from trick or treating and trade it in for a toy or gift. The patients also have the opportunity to meet with diabetes technology companies and receive education about how diabetes affects their teeth, nutrition, eyes and more.
Turner’s Syndrome Workshop
This Fall the Division will also host a Turner’s Syndrome Workshop for female patients and their families to learn about their diagnosis, meet other young women living with Turner’s Syndrome and participate in fun and educational activities.
