From the Chair

Welcome to Montefiore–Einstein’s Department of Medicine. The department’s mission is to provide the highest quality patient care to all who need it, perform cutting edge research leading to the discovery of new cures for diseases, train students and physicians, and develop programs of community engagement to serve our Bronx community.

Montefiore and Einstein’s longstanding connection to the diverse and largely underserved Bronx community presents both unique challenges and opportunities. Our great institution shares a deep commitment to training ethical and compassionate physicians and scientists who work tirelessly to meet the needs of our community. Indeed, Sylvia Burwell, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, chose the Bronx as the platform to announce the changes in Medicare’s reimbursement models, underscoring Montefiore as a model institution implementing health care reform.

Our Department of Medicine comprises an extraordinary team of dedicated socially driven clinicians, investigators and educators from 14 academic divisions, across many disciplines. We have more than 850 full–time and voluntary faculty and are currently training over 300 residents and fellows.

The recent merger of Montefiore and Einstein greatly strengthens the department’s collaborative culture, fostering multidisciplinary and translational research. Our faculty leads five NIH–funded Centers of Excellence that are hubs for research activity spanning all subspecialties of Medicine. Mentoring is a critical element of our academic excellence and success. Our department’s strong mentoring program helps talented junior faculty develop into independent investigators. We believe that career development starts during training. Therefore, our faculty mentor residents and fellows working on innovative projects in the clinic or in the lab, both in the Bronx community and abroad. We aim to inspire a new generation of exceptionally dedicated care providers, physician–scientists, and future leaders in all areas of academic medicine.

Today, our role as physicians goes beyond fixing things when they are broken and does not end when the patient leaves our office. As health care providers, we are expected to improve the health of our communities through outstanding clinical care, chronic disease management, disease prevention, population health management, and much more.

Here at Montefiore and Einstein we serve as an outstanding model of social medicine and social justice. Together we will continue to lead the way, to benefit the people of the Bronx and the nation.
