Otorhinolaryngology: Year 4

The senior resident assumes much more responsibility for the service in the hospital where he/she is a senior resident, although he/she continues to be supervised by attendings and Chief Residents. His/her rotations include 6 months at the Montefiore West location, 3 months at LIJ and 3 months for research. There are 4 weeks of vacation.

The resident participates in the teaching and supervision of medical students as well as junior residents on the same rotation. During this year, the resident begins to take second level on-call to assist the junior residents.

In the operating room, the resident advances to more intricate otologic surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, major head and neck surgery (including thyroid and parathyroid), endoscopic sinus surgery and laser surgery (e.g. bronchoscopy and arytenoidectomy). Experience will be gained in the surgical management of sleep disorders.

During this year he/she has a research rotation, which provides protected time to conduct his/her research project, to be conducted under the mentorship of one of the research faculty. This rotation does not preclude additional time spent over the remainder of his/her residency for ongoing research.

He/she participates in the AECOM Department of Otolaryngology Basic Science Course at Montefiore Medical Center, AAO-HNS Patient Management Problem and the AAO-HNS Home Study Course, the Annual Otolaryngology Examination, and the AECOM temporal bone course. He/she participates in the New York and Long Island Otolaryngology Society meetings, the NY Head and Neck Society meetings and attends the Eastern Section of the Triologic Society. Sinus surgical dissection occurs in the Spring at the time of the Annual Rhinology Symposium and Laboratory Dissection course.

This resident also is required to participate in the Business of Medicine course, which was established in collaboration with faculty from the Harvard Business School.
