Medical Physics Residency Curriculum

The Department of Radiation Oncology’s Medical Physics program follows the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc. (CAMPEP). The Department was originally certified by CAMPEP in 2010 and recertified in 2015. Certification is valid through 2020.

The Department of Radiation Oncology’s Medical Physics Residency is administered by a program director, who works with the Medical Physics Residency Committee. The program director advises residents, coordinates clinical rotations and didactic training, evaluates and promotes the program. The committee meets regularly to review the progress of the residents.

The curriculum follows the “AAPM Report 90: Essentials and Guidelines for Hospital-Based Medical Physics Residency Training Programs”

The curriculum provides:

  • Didactics with medical residents
  • Physics discourses with physicists
  • Peer review of all clinical cases
  • Participation in clinical research and developmental projects
  • Linac QA
  • Treatment planning

In addition to the comprehensive set of hands-on experiences, residents will have access to three centers equipped collectively with:

  • 5 Varian linear accelerators (1 Edge, 1 Halcyon, 1 Truebeam, 1 Trilogy, and one 21EX)
  • 1 Accuray Radixact
  • 1 Zeiss Intrabeam 600
  • 1 Siemens MR Simulator
  • A very active SBRT program
  • 2 GE CT scanners
  • Brachytherapy including High Dose Rate (HDR) with Nucletron Flexitron and Prostate Seed Implants
  • IGRT and motion management capabilities utilizing Varian’s Respiratory Gating with DIBH, Calypso beacon RF guidance, CBCT, OBI, and Gated RapidArc
  • A very active SBRT program
  • A very active SRS program utilizing Brainlab’s Exactrac and Elements software
  • Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT)
  • Total Body Irradiation (TBI) and Total Skin Electron Beam Therapy (TSET)
