Why Medical Physics Residents Choose Montefiore

The Department of Radiation Oncology’s Medical Physics Residency is a two year Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP) approved training program, designed for candidates who are interested in careers in clinical radiation oncology physics. The Medical Physics Residency Program, with a sub-specialty of Therapeutic Radiologic Physics, provides structured training and progress assessment in all aspects of clinical therapeutic radiation oncology physics under supervision of board certified medical physicists.

Objectives of the medical physics residency program:

  • Provide in-depth professional training and comprehensive exposure in science and technology of therapeutic radiologic physics in a structured clinical environment.
  • Enhance critical thinking and problem solving skills regarding clinical practice decision making.
  • Develop resident competency in codes of ethics in professional practice.
  • Facilitate understanding of the topics from the study guides of the American Board of Medical Physics and the American Board of Radiology.

Upon completion of the program, medical physics residents will be competent in all areas of therapeutic radiologic physics and prepared to qualify for the certification examination of the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiology Physics.

The successful applicant will join a team of ten faculty/clinical board-certified physicists, seven dosimetrists, eleven radiation oncologists, and seven medical residents, in the Department of Radiation Oncology.

Residents entering a medical physics residency educational program shall have a strong foundation in basic physics. This shall be demonstrated either by an undergraduate or graduate degree in physics, or by a degree in an engineering discipline or another of the physical sciences and with coursework that is the equivalent of a minor in physics (i.e., one that includes at least three upper-level undergraduate physics courses that would be required for a physics major). In addition, residents must either have graduated from a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program, or possess a PhD in physics or related discipline and have completed a CAMPEP-accredited certificate program.

All candidates are required to obtain a New York State limited permit license prior to starting residency. Positions, details, and other requirements are offered via the AAPM MP-RAP website.
