Nursing Research Symposium to be Held at Montefiore

Role of Research in Nursing Practice to be Highlighted

New York City, New York, (September 6, 2012) – The Second Annual Nursing Research Symposium will be held at Montefiore Medical Center on September 18 from 8:30 am - 5 pm. The theme is “The Role of Research in Nursing Practice.” This symposium seeks to provide tools and resources for healthcare professionals through the advancement of clinical, behavioral and educational research within an interdisciplinary and collaborative framework.
“Education and practice grounded in evidence of effectiveness have become the benchmarks for quality nursing care,” said Jane O’Rourke, RN, DNP, NEA-BC, CENP, Director of Nursing, Evidence-Based Practice, and chairperson of the symposium. “At Montefiore, we want to foster the growth of evidence-based practice by encouraging nurses at the staff level to engage in research activities. We collaborate with our nurses who have interests in research to present, review and discuss nursing research current to our times.”
Montefiore nurses from many disciplines have submitted research presentations, which include “The Lived Experiences of Families Who Have Attended a Cardiogenetic Clinic,” “Ericksonian Hypnotherapeutic Approaches in Chronic Care Support Groups: A Rogerian Exploration of Power and Self-Defined Health Promoting Goals,” “Nurses’ Perceptions of the Usefulness of High Fidelity Simulation Technology in a Clinical Educational Program” and “Evolution of Montefiore’s Fall Prevention Program.”
The keynote speaker will be Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo, PhD, RN, BC, CPHQ, NEA, Chair of the Council for Nursing Research, NYSNA. He is also Associate Dean of Faculty Services at the Rutgers University College of Nursing. The topic of his talk will be: “Evidence-Based Practice & Research: Its Place in Healthcare.”
Ms. O’Rourke is responsible for the enabling nursing performance improvement, evidenced-based practice and research. In her role, she incorporates standards of practice for Nursing as defined by the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice and Nursing’s Social Policy Statement and has helped implement these standards into Nursing practice throughout the entire institution.
Research has been a key component of Ms. O’Rourke’s career. She has held research, education and leadership roles at prestigious medical centers in the tri-state area, which include Bergen Regional Medical Center, Helen Hayes Hospital, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Bronx-Lebanon and New York Downtown Hospital. She holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a Masters and Bachelor’s degree from Hunter College.
