Award Will Fund New Artist-in-Residence Program for Adult Cancer Patients at Montefiore New York City, NY (May 7, 2012) – The Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care has been announced as a LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project award recipient. The award will be used to replicate The Creative Center Artist-in-Residence program, a partner of the LiveStrong Foundation, and will bring bedside creative arts activities to adult oncology patients at Montefiore for an entire year. Montefiore competed with 10 other hospitals in the Northeast for The Creative Center Artist-in-Residence program, and won first place in the Northeast after receiving more than 3,200 online votes from its community. “We are proud to be named as a LIVESTRONG Community Impact Project award recipient,” said Steven Libutti, MD, Vice Chairman of Surgery and Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care. “This award will directly impact our ability to support those in our Bronx community who are affected by cancer, and we thank everyone who voted to bring this program to Montefiore. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. ” “This program exemplifies Montefiore’s commitment to using the arts and creative arts therapies to enhance the quality of life, health and well-being of patients,” said Ronit Fallek, MPA, Director, Montefiore Healing Arts Program. “We are grateful for the votes we received from our Bronx community, our colleagues and friends to bring this beneficial psychosocial support to our patients.” The Montefiore Healing Arts Program strives to enrich the quality of life for patients and employees through the arts and creative arts therapies, and will be involved in developing the Artist-in-Residence program funded by LIVESTRONG. The LIVESTRONG Community Impact Project, created by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, will bring proven cancer support programs to 90 communities across the United States. The Lance Armstrong Foundation is the non-profit organization founded by the cancer survivor and champion cyclist to serve people affected by cancer and empower them to take action. More than 200 qualified hospitals, cancer centers, university students and community organizations in eight regions across the United States were selected to participate in an online voting campaign in March to win one of several LIVESTRONG Community Impact Projects. Over a two-week period, more than 450,000 votes were cast. Studies have demonstrated the positive emotional effects that artistic expression can have on patients who are undergoing cancer treatment. The Creative Center Artist-In-Residence Program trains artists and healthcare administrators to design, implement and evaluate arts programs that help patients, their families and caregivers, as well as hospital staff, discover their own creative resources and reduce anxieties, fears, isolation and boredom during treatment by engaging in the arts. The Artist-in-Residence Program at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care is expected to begin by mid-summer.
