BRONX, NY (January 19, 2010) - A team of Montefiore Medical Center clinicians joined The Surgeons of Hope Foundation, an international medical relief organization, today, January 19, in Port-au-Prince. The team flew into Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and made its way to Port-au-Prince by way of helicopter. The team is led by Dr. Dominique Jan, Chief of Pediatric Surgery at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore who is also a board member of The Surgeons of Hope Foundation. The other three members of the Montefiore team include Dr. Alexandra Bastien, Anethesiologist; Lynoid Wallerson, Trauma Technician; and Rachael Jones, OR Nurse. The relief team brought their own medical supplies and equipment.

Dr. Dominique Jan has a considerable history with The Surgeons of Hope Foundation, having participated in previous medical missions throughout the world with the organization.  Dr. Alain Deloche, the Founder of Surgeons of Hope and a well-known cardiovascular surgeon, reached out to Dr. Dominique Jan directly to call on his and Montefiore Medical Center's assistance.  Deloche invited Montefiore clinicians to join his team which was already set-up and working in Port-au-Prince.

"This crisis hits particularly close to home for Montefiore's family, as multiple employees and patients are from Haiti. While many organizations and individuals feel powerless, we are fortunate enough to be in the position where we can offer our expertise and resources.  It is undoubtedly our responsibility to step forward and extend our help and support," said Steven M. Safyer, MD., President and CEO of Montefiore Medical Center.
