Janet Lipson | Turning the Tables on Cancer
Janet's Story
Janet Lipson was treated for pancreatic cancer at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care. She spent 10 days in the hospital and underwent an aggressive treatment plan including chemotherapy and radiation before her surgery.
There is no standard treatment for the type of cancer Janet had, which involved a borderline resectable tumor. Surgery would not be enough to remove the entire tumor. A team led by surgical oncologist Dr. Peter Shamamian and including medical oncologist Dr. Santiago Aparo, and radiation oncologist Dr. Maury Rosenstein, put Janet on a new clinical protocol for aggressive chemotherapy and radiotherapy prior to removing part of the hepatic artery, portal vein and reconstructing both—a highly-complicated procedure.
Janet is now cancer-free, but she still insists on spending time at Montefiore—this time as a caregiver volunteer, bringing homemade cookies to the nurses, and encouragement to the families of cancer patients.
Janet says her experience inspired her to give back to the doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff that she says made her feel "wonderfully acknowledged, respected and cared for" throughout her journey.
