Newly Outfitted Patient Suites & Family Lounge to Benefit Kuwaiti Families Seeking Advanced Musculoskeletal Care
in New York City

NEW YORK (May 10, 2023) - Montefiore Health System has announced a partnership with Kuwait to exclusively provide orthopedic surgeries and rehabilitation medicine services to Kuwaiti children and adults in need of sophisticated musculoskeletal care, including but not limited to, knee and hip replacements, osteosarcomas, spine surgeries and complicated elongation procedures.

Montefiore has upgraded four patient suites and renovated a family lounge at its Magnet® designated Wakefield Hospital, a location which is recognized by the American Nursing Credentialing Center for nursing excellence and high-quality patient care. The new spaces have been meticulously designed to suit the unique customs and culture of the middle eastern residents. With personalized touches like Persian rugs and more, Kuwaiti patients will feel at home while away from home.

In addition to an aesthetic that is reflective of Kuwaiti cultural heritage, patients will benefit from the care of the orthopedic surgery team, which has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for its knee replacement program. Montefiore’s Orthopedic Department, which performs more than 2,000 joint replacement surgeries per year, has also been recognized by The Joint Commission with recertification in Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement, and is one of only four institutions in New York City to receive this national certification.

After surgery, Kuwaiti patients will be cared for by Montefiore’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialists, who are nationally recognized for providing leading physical rehabilitation treatment and a full spectrum of high-quality rehabilitation services. These clinicians are renowned for their skill in helping restore people to optimal function and independence after surgery, using innovative technologies and the latest treatment techniques.

“We understand the uneasy feeling of needing medical procedures far from home – that is why our goal is to provide the most exceptional care in the most family friendly oriented atmosphere for every Kuwaiti seeking services at Montefiore,” said Irene Gebrael, PhD, Associate Vice President, Montefiore International Department. “We proactively map out every step of the care plan, with an emphasis on fast turnaround times, to ensure our international patients benefit from our comprehensive suite of services, all under one roof.”

The International Department at Montefiore launched in 2013 has coordinated care for over 1,854 patients from over 20 countries. Every aspect of a patient’s care, as well as the needs of their families, is handled by the International Department, from plans of care, medications, reports and appointments to logistics like transportation and accommodations to visa applications and translation services and everything that has to do with the patients’ stay in the United States.

“We are very excited and looking forward to building on our long relationship and partnership. Allocating special modified rooms for our citizens is the icing on the cake,” said Dr. Faisal Saleh, Head of the Kuwait Health Office, Washington, DC. “We look forward to adding more specialties at Montefiore to help our citizens, including heart and lung transplants, orthopedic and oncology services.”

“This initiative by Montefiore to create specialized suites for Kuwaiti patients reflects the growing and homogenous relations between Kuwait and the Health Office in DC,” added His Excellency, Ambassador Azzam Al-Asfoor, Consul General of Kuwait in USA. “New York is renowned for its leading medical centers, and we aim to connect Kuwaiti citizens with the best care in the region.”
