STD Initiative
The Montefiore Medical Center STD/HIV Prevention Training Initiative is the educational endeavor of the New York State Department of Health, AIDS Insititute Bureau of STD Prevention and Epidemiology.
The mission is to provide comprehensive care to patients and provide state-of-the-art training to health care providers caring for individuals with, or at risk for, sexually transmitted diseases.
It first opened in 1992 at Mt. Vernon Hospital. Soon after, it became a CDC STD/HIV Training Facility, as well as the NYS (Bureau) of STD Training Center. In 1996 the center moved to Montefiore in response to the needs of the Bronx community.
Since its arrival at Montefiore, more than 1400 medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse clinicians, doctors of osteopathy, laboratory technologists and medical students have received training. Over the years, more than 30,000 residents of the Bronx, New York City and New York State have been served at the Montefiore STD Initiative. In addition, providers have consistently referred patients to the center for consultation and care. The STD Initiative has been given the highest grades by both patients and providers for its services and treatments to individuals suffering from a variety of sexually transmitted diseases.
