Recruitment Underway to Fill Nearly 200 New Positions
NEW YORK (October 24, 2013) – Montefiore Medical Center today announced plans to transition to Epic, the next generation information and electronic health record (EHR) system. Implementation will begin in January 2014 and requires the hiring of nearly 200 associates to support the three-year process. Designed for a range of functions, Epic offers clinical and financial systems, registration and scheduling capabilities and the ability for patients to access their own health information.
More than 270 health systems currently use Epic, including academic medical centers and large integrated delivery systems such as Johns Hopkins, New York University, Mount Sinai, Cleveland Clinic and Kaiser Permanente. “Montefiore is a pioneer in electronic health records and integrated systems for the management of patient information, having implemented our first electronic health records more than 18 years ago. We are continuing to evolve with advances in technology, which will enhance our ability to serve patients across the continuum of care,” said Andrew D. Racine, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer at Montefiore Medical Center. “This is a project of considerable scope that will be staffed by current Montefiore associates as well as new hires. Opportunities are available for a variety of positions, including application analysts, instructional designers and product managers. Upon completion, these associates will support ongoing Epic optimization and additional positions will be made available in the Montefiore Health System.”
Montefiore selected Epic due to the growing importance of patient engagement, smooth transitions of care, centralized scheduling, documentation across patient visits, accountable care and translational research. Epic also enhances communication among healthcare team members and promotes coordinated patient care. Hospital-based and community physicians who practice within Montefiore's delivery system will have access to all of a patient's information, can see results as soon as they are available and can communicate directly with other physicians about a patient.
“Through Epic’s seamless EHR system, Montefiore will be able to enhance the safety, quality, efficiency and convenience of our care delivery system, transform patients’ experience, and foster advances in research, clinical connectivity and other innovations,” said Michael Prilutsky, vice president and executive project director for Epic at Montefiore. “Epic will grant all Montefiore providers access to patients’ records anywhere in the system and allow patients to view significant components of their records securely in a patient portal from any computer.”
To date, approximately 49 percent of the U.S. patient population has a medical record in Epic. Montefiore will add more than 500,000 patients into the system in its first year. Completion of the implementation throughout the entire Montefiore System is anticipated by the end of 2016.
