The Department of Radiology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine has a longstanding reputation for excellence in imaging, responsive service, education and research. We offer the full range of advanced diagnostic imaging technology, including minimally invasive vascular and neuro-interventional procedures. Quality and safety are at the core of our every effort.
Chairman E. Stephen Amis, Jr., MD, Gold Medalist of the American College of Radiology and the Society of Uroradiology, has led the Department for over 20 years. He has played an integral role in expanding the Department to 80 board certified radiologists with more than 600,000 radiological studies performed on patients of all ages each year.
Subspecialized Patient Care
Our department consists of a team of highly specialized experts in abdominal, cardiothoracic, musculoskeletal, neuroradiology, interventional neuroradiology, pediatric and vascular interventional radiology. All of our doctors thoroughly understand the diseases and conditions associated with each subspecialty and tailor every patient exam accordingly. Children's examinations are interpreted by subspecialty-trained pediatric radiologists.
Diagnosis and Evaluation
The first step toward recovery begins with a proper diagnosis. In conjunction with your doctor, our specialized radiologists diagnose and assess medical disorders, including breast, orthopaedic, neurological and vascular injury and disease. Some of the exams and procedures we perform to aid in your medical care are:
CAT (CT) Scan to see internal anatomy in detail
Mammography & Breast Imaging for prevention and diagnosis of breast cancer
MRI uses a magnetic field to create high-resolution images
Ultrasound uses sound waves to view internal structures
X-ray/fluoroscopy uses electromagnetic radiation to see inside the body
Interventional Neuroradiology subspecializes in image-guided technologies/procedures to diagnoses and treat diseases of the head, neck and spine
Vascular and Interventional Radiology uses image guidance for minimally invasive procedures usually done with needles or catheters for diagnostic and treatment purposes.
Groundbreaking History in Radiology
Always at the forefront of cutting-edge treatments, Montefiore initiated several critical radiological advances which continue to offer patients countless benefits. We were among the first to perform endovascular embolization for intracranial aneurysms in the early 1990s and the first in the tri-state area to perform vertebroplasty. Along with our vascular surgeon colleagues, we pioneered superficial femoral artery and tibial vessel recanalization for limb salvage. Our Department also acquired a 1.0 Tesla Open MRI, enabling easier positioning and maximum comfort for large or disabled patients, or those who suffer from claustrophobia.
State-of-the-Art Technology and Services
We have seven MRI units (including two high field 3.0 Tesla MRI scanners) and 12 multidetector CT scanners. To facilitate communication and allow for optimal patient care, we use PACS (Picture Archiving Communication System) so a referring physician may review a study throughout the hospital, as well from his or her office.
Patients come to us from near and far because our radiologists have distinguished themselves in the field. We offer digital mammography and perform state-of-the-art imaging guided procedures to treat conditions including: brain aneurysms, vascular malformations, spine fractures, uterine fibroids, liver tumors and nerve compression.
At Montefiore, we are respectful of your time and busy schedule. We have several imaging sites throughout the Bronx and Westchester for your convenience. Our friendly staff will help you schedule your examination at a convenient location and time. When your doctor orders an imaging test at Montefiore, a single call to 866-MMC-XRAY (866-662-9729) is all it takes to schedule the earliest appointment for you.
