Montefiore Healing Arts, White Plains Hospital and Arts Westchester have teamed up to bring you an event to celebrate your community through art.

  • Learn useful relaxation techniques
  • Sip some herbal tea
  • Breathe in the soothing scent of lavender
  • Try your hand at a little meditative coloring
  • Decompress with some gentle music
  • Take home gifts to celebrate the 5 senses

The featured activity of the day will be the creation of a community canvas to be proudly displayed at White Plains Hospital. Led by multi-talented artist Mary McFerran, attendees will be invited to paint individual watercolor tiles that express their feelings about their community. When completed, the individual tiles will be woven together to create a larger piece of art to adorn the walls of the hospital’s Center for Cancer Care.

Healing Arts at Montefiore is a network of programs that uses the arts, creative arts therapies, integrative medicine and other healing approaches to enhance the quality of life, health and well-being of Montefiore’s patients, associates and community. Healing Arts programs are available in the Children’s Hospital, Oncology, Palliative Care, Rehabilitation Medicine, Psychiatry, and other departments to complement patient care by helping to reduce pain and other physical symptoms, provide comfort and enjoyment, promote self-expression, and enhance quality of life.

Arts Westchester envisions a Westchester where every man, woman and child can explore his or her creative impulses; where the arts are accessible to every sector of society and are an educational priority in our schools; where opportunities for artist are plentiful; where public art is fundamental to the landscape and cityscape and where a new generation can use the arts as a window to the world.

Mary McFerran

Mary McFerran works with textiles the way an adventurous chef invents a new dish. Mixing old with new, familiar with surprising, she pulls from multiple sources, both tactile and subliminal, to assemble her art. Memory, texture, color, insight, sweetness, pain and outrage overlap. Each piece, whether it’s simple wordplay in a stark setting, or a suggested landscape, is held together with a sewn line; hand-stitched or machine-generated. Like a great new dish, it can nourish but also tantalize, leaving us wanting more.
