In Memoriam: Ronald M. Burde, MD

“I’ve tried to teach them a mixture of science and humanism. You have to have science, but if you don’t feel something for the patient and make the patient feel better, you’re just a good doctor, not a great physician.”
–Ronald M. Burde, MD

It is with great sadness that in 2015 all of us here in the Department noted the passing of our esteemed physician, educator and Montefiore colleague, Ronald M. Burde, MD, after a long illness.

Dr. Burde led the Department of Ophthalmology for 12 years, creating a core of excellent physicians and a vibrant residency program. In addition to his expertise in neuro-ophthalmology, Dr. Burde was passionate about resident education and training. He instilled in his students a strong sense of humanity in addition to providing them with the technical and scientific expertise necessary to become skilled and compassionate physicians.

Dr. Burde’s legacy at Montefiore is such that we created a special ophthalmology resident education fund in his honor, to uphold the excellence in resident training that he cared so much about and was so very important to him.

We invite you to join us in supporting the Ronald M. Burde, MD Resident Education Fund.

Your support of this important program will honor Dr. Burde’s legacy by enhancing our ability to provide the highest quality training to our ophthalmology residents and fellows. You can make a secure online gift below. The Burde family will be notified of your generosity.

Gifts at the $1,000 (Bronze), $2,000 (Silver), $5,000 (Gold) and $10,000 (Platinum) levels will be recognized on a commemorative plaque that will be placed in the new lab.

Thank you.
