The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at Montefiore Medical Center (MMC), and it's Chairman, the internationally respected Dr. Irwin R. Merkatz, is one of the premier departments in the United States.  The department's primary mission is to provide comprehensive women's health care to a diverse population of women. Simultaneous with this is the department's commitment to encourage and conduct clinical and basic science research in women's health and perinatal obstetrics and specialty women's health services in order to optimize the health and well-being of women and infants into the 21st century. To this end, an academic environment has been fostered which supports young faculty jointly within its boundaries and through innovative interdisciplinary relationships with both basic science departments and sister clinical departments, includes the continuing education of our health professionals.

Women's Health at MMC is a center of excellence. For the past four decades, Montefiore has been at the forefront of women's health care on the national level. We have developed and implemented advances in high-risk pregnancy evaluation, prenatal diagnosis, ovarian and gyn cancer therapy, genetic screening, menopause care, and the treatment of infertility and urinary incontinence.

The department has over 200 faculty members, all of whom have met the rigorous standards for qualifying for faculty status at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In addition to obstetrician / gynecologists, this department also includes certified nurse midwives (CNM) who provide prenatal care and birth services at the Weiler Division, nurses who do research, scientists who work on finding the latest breakthroughs in women's health, and many community programs.

Physicians in this department work at both divisions of Montefiore. At the Moses Division they see patients who need gynecologic surgery or have problems with their urinary systems such as incontinence. At the Weiler Division, providers take care of the women in labor, do surgery for women who have gynecologic cancers, care for women with infertility problems, and do the special testing for women with any complications in their pregnancies. The department also runs a full service genetics laboratory at the Montefiore Medical Park of the Weiler Division.

The department also sees patients at several sites outside of the Bronx, including the  Montefiore's Institute for Reproductive Medicine & Health in Hartsdale as well as office practices in Larchmont and New York City. Treatment for infertility is concentrated at the Dobbs Ferry and Hartsdale sites, where departmental specialists care of the infertile woman work alongside specialists in care of the woman with a high-risk pregnancy in order to provide the most comprehensive care possible.

Faculty members in this department have received local, national and international acclaim for their unique accomplishments. They conduct many research projects, and have received numerous grants to help increase the knowledge we have about how best to care for women at all stages of their lives.
