The Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care has a proud tradition of clinical excellence and research leadership in adult and pediatric cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. Montefiore continues to be a pioneer in heart rhythm disorders, interventional and minimally invasive cardiac procedures, and is at the forefront of using ventricular assist devices (VADs) for the treatment of heart failure. Montefiore is a primary resource for patients requiring complex, high-risk procedures such as mitral and aortic valve repair, abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair and heart transplantation for both children and adults. Our leadership in heart care spans more than a half century. We performed our first open heart surgery in 1957, developed and used the world's first transvenous pacemaker system in 1958, and performed the first coronary artery bypass operation in 1960. Today, we continue to pioneer innovations in cardiovascular care. Led by Robert E. Michler, MD and Mario J. Garcia, MD, the team at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care envisions a day when cardiovascular disease is no longer the leading cause of illness and shortened life.
