Urology
Professional Training Programs
The Department of Urology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine offers an intensive, academically-oriented program in clinical and investigative urological surgery. Two residents per year are selected as part of the Residency Matching Program. Two years of general surgery are required to be completed at the Albert Einstein's Department of Surgery prior to beginning the four year urology program, although a change to 1 preliminary year of general surgery is expected after review by the ACGME.
All hospitals at which rotations occur are located in the Bronx. The first year of urology residency is spent rotating through the adult services at the Montefiore Hospital, at both the Moses and Einstein Hospital Campuses. In the second year, the resident rotates at the Montefiore Wakefield Campus. Throughout the residency experience, residents will have both inpatient and outpatient clinic experiences, seeing and managing patients in a supervised setting. Increasing responsibility is given to the residents during their third and fourth (Chief) years, which include rotations in Pediatrics, Jacobi Medical Center, and the various Montefiore Hospital Divisions.
The curriculum includes basic science relevant to urology, urological imaging and pathology, and clinical teaching in all areas of urology. A large voluntary faculty participates in this process and attends regular conferences and journal clubs. Residents are encouraged to participate in research projects and present at local and national meetings. Subspecialty expertise in a variety of fields of endeavor are highlights of the training program.
Recent graduates of the program have gone on to successful careers in both academia and private practice, and have achieved entry to highly competitive fellowships in pediatric urology, oncology, minimally invasive surgery, and female urology.
