Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery

At Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, our patients have access to some of the most advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques to help manage and treat cancer.
Our multidisciplinary team includes world leaders in the development and administration of minimally invasive surgical approaches.

Partnering to Advance Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery

The team at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center partners with the Montefiore Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIMIS) to bring the latest tools and technologies to your care.

As a premier research and training facility, MIMIS is continually researching the best and latest uses of minimally invasive surgery technologies. It also serves as a testing and evaluation site, providing access to new technologies not yet otherwise available.

About Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery uses multiple small incisions or cuts to access the surgical site rather than traditional open surgery, which uses a long cut along your body. The latest robotic technology is utilized in many of our minimally invasive surgeries.

We use robotic and minimally invasive surgery to treat many types of cancer, including:

Our world-renowned surgeons also use minimally invasive methods when performing radiosurgery  and regional therapy for cancer treatment.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery: What to Expect

Compared to traditional open surgery, the benefits of robotic and minimally invasive surgeries include:

  • Less blood loss
  • Less pain
  • Quicker recovery with less downtime
  • Reduced chance of needing a blood transfusion
  • Reduced scarring
  • Reduced risk of complications and infection
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller incisions

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Colon Cancer

At Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, we offer a full spectrum of laparoscopic and robotic sphincter-saving surgeries, which greatly reduce the likelihood of the need for a colostomy.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Esophageal and Gastric Cancer

Our Cancer Center offers minimally invasive and robotic options for many types of esophageal and gastric cancer surgeries, including video-assisted thoracoscopic laparoscopic surgery (VATS) and endoluminal procedure, which is surgery using a long, lighted flexible tube to minimize trauma to nearby organs.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Gynecologic Cancers

At Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, you have access to the latest options in robotic and minimally invasive surgery for gynecologic cancers to minimize your pain and speed your recovery.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Head and Neck Cancer

Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of only a few centers in the New York metropolitan area that performs minimally invasive endoscopic larynx surgery for advanced-stage larynx cancer. This procedure helps preserve the voice and ability to swallow.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Prostate Cancer

Our Cancer Center offers state-of-the-art robotic surgery to treat prostate cancer. A robotic-assisted procedure offers all the potential advantages of a minimally invasive procedure, including the ability to preserve erectile function and urinary continence after prostate surgery.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Melanoma

Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center offers isolated limb infusion (ILI), a simplified, minimally invasive procedure offered to those patients who are poor candidates for ILP.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Lung Cancer and Mediastinal Tumors

Robotic surgery to treat lung cancer and mediastinal tumors at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center can help you return to your usual daily activities more quickly than traditional open surgery. Robotic surgical techniques also provide many benefits to those who previously had no surgical options.

We can use robotic surgery to treat mediastinal tumors (located in the middle chest between the breastbone and spinal column) or for thymectomy (thymus gland removal).

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Sarcoma

Navigation-guided surgery, also referred to as image-guided or computer-assisted surgery, may be used to treat sarcoma. This treatment uses imaging modalities, such as a computed tomography (CT) scan, to increase the accuracy specific procedures.

This technology tracks the position and movements of surgical instruments, linking them to an imaging study in real time. This allows the surgeon to make very small, very specific corrections, thereby greatly improving surgical accuracy.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat Urologic Cancers

For the treatment of urologic cancers, minimally invasive and robotic surgery provides the precision necessary for complex procedures such as urinary diversion, partial nephrectomy and radical cystectomy.
