Treatments/Procedures for Heart and Vascular Disease

Since performing its first open-heart surgery in 1957, Montefiore Medical Center has been at the forefront in developing and delivering novel treatment options for patients with heart disease.

It is a tradition that continues today with the first pediatric heart transplant in the Bronx, New York, successfully performed in 2009 at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore, and in 2011 with the completion of Montefiore's 100th heart transplant.

Patients have come to expect nothing but the best from Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care, a destination center for patients with some of the world's most complex cardiovascular cases.

Cardiac Arrhythmia

Montefiore's reputation as a long-standing leader in the field of electrophysiology began in 1958 when its physicians implanted the world's first transvenous cardiac pacemaker. Since then, the medical center has been a forerunner in the development and advancement of ablation techniques and was one of the first in the world to implant a cardioverter defibrillator.

Composed of highly trained and experienced clinicians, Montefiore's electrophysiology group takes a multidisciplinary approach to care, collaborating with cardiac surgeons, diagnostic imaging specialists, geneticists and cardiologists to provide patients with an individualized plan of treatment for the most complex cardiac rhythm problems.

Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is a subspecialty of cardiology that involves treating patients with heart conditions with catheters rather than open surgery. Our award-winning interventional cardiologists have been at the forefront of this field for nearly 20 years and have greatly impacted modern cardiology, particularly with the treatment of patients suffering heart attacks.

The medical center's state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories offer the most advanced technology available for the diagnosis and treatment of both cardiac and vascular cases and give physicians the ability to conduct a wide range of sophisticated, minimally invasive procedures. More than 2,000 interventional cardiology procedures are performed each year.

In addition, the Center's door-to-balloon time record of near 100 percent completed in 90 minutes or less for percutaneous revascularization procedures has led to the preservation of heart function and prevention of deaths in patients suffering acute myocardial infarction. In many of these cases, coronary blood vessels were reopened in less than 60 minutes. Learn more about interventional cardiology options.
