PARENTS BUILD A CIRCLE OF SUPPORT AT CERC EVENT

Montefiore's fourth annual series of workshops and seminars for parents of children with disabilities was recently held at the Rose F. Kennedy Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC). Workshops, led by CERC clinicians, derived their content entirely from parent feedback with topics including social media use and misuse, coping mechanisms, behavior management, and navigating the healthcare and education systems. Many clinicians remained on hand to provide families with individualized information pertaining to their child's diagnosis and empower them to advocate for their children. The event further provided an opportunity for parents to connect and share advice while building a support network.

Montefiore Participates in Innovative Coronary Intervention Clinical Trial

"AS RESEARCHERS, WE ARE EXTREMELY PROUD THAT OUR TEAM WAS THE FIRST IN THE UNITED STATES TO PLACE THIS DEVICE IN A PATIENT AND IS CURRENTLY LEADING THE FDA APPROVAL STUDY. OUR PATIENTS WITH ADVANCED HEART DISEASE CAN COUNT ON FINDING CUTTING-EDGE HEART FAILURE THERAPIES AT MONTEFIORE."
—DR. JORDE

Montefiore physicians Ulrich P. Jorde, MD, and Robert T. Pyo, MD, are pioneering the use of a new ventricular support device for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization whose circulatory systems are too weak to withstand the procedure without support. Dr. Jorde, Section Head, Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support; Vice Chief, Cardiology, Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care, and Professor, Cardiology, Einstein, and Dr. Pyo, Associate Director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care, are currently participating in a clinical trial for a complex percutaneous coronary intervention utilizing this new device called the Percutaneous Heart Pump (PHP). Dr. Jorde is a national principal investigator for this study and Dr. Pyo was the first interventional cardiologist to use this pump in the United States. This innovative device is specifically intended for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization whose circulatory systems are too weak to withstand the procedure. The PHP—already in use in Europe—is currently investigational in the United States, aiming to attain FDA approval for use in these specific cases of sick or weak patients.

Montefiore was selected for participation in the initial clinical trials due to its expertise and national renown in the use of ventricular support devices for the treatment of end-stage heart disease. “This new generation of ventricular pumps will be very useful for our aging, sick population with weak hearts and coronary heart disease. We believe that this new pump may provide adequate support to safely perform complex coronary procedures in these patients who cannot be treated optimally with medications alone,” says Dr. Pyo.

The PHP is currently restricted for use by those participating in the clinical trials. However Dr. Pyo hopes that they will soon be made available to the general public. “As researchers, we are extremely proud that our team was the first in the United States to place this device in a patient and is currently leading the FDA approval study. More importantly, we are even more proud that our patients with advanced heart disease can count on finding the cutting edge of heart failure therapies at Montefiore,” says Dr. Jorde.

MONTEFIORE’S LARGEST EPIC GO-LIVE TO DATE A SUCCESS

On June 10, Montefiore completed its clinical transformation at the Moses Campus, including the Children’s Hospital at Moses (CHAM), and the Wakefield Campus, as more than 6,800 associates went live with Epic@Montefiore. They joined the Einstein, Wakefield and Westchester Square campuses, as well as numerous outpatient sites and ancillary services, in providing patients with more comprehensive care.
