KEEP THE FUN IN SUMMER SUN

KEEP THE FUN IN SUMMER SUN

Nobody enjoys a sunburn and it’s easy to avoid. We recently spoke with Katia Papalezova, MD, Surgical Oncology, Department of Surgery, Montefiore, and Associate Professor, Surgery, Einstein, to get some expert tips on keeping your skin safe all summer.

"Plan to seek shade between 10 am and 4 pm on sunny days. Do not allow yourself to burn, and avoid tanning. Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when possible. Use a broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, UVA/UVB sunscreen every day, and apply it at least 30 minutes before you go outside. One to two ounces will cover all your exposed skin from top to bottom (an amount about the size of a ping pong ball) and you should reapply every two hours. To protect your lips, apply a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher," she says.

Signs of melanoma include a change in the appearance of a mole or pigmented area, in which case you should schedule a skin exam promptly. Montefiore’s Melanoma Program is one of the only programs in the area to offer advanced therapies to treat melanomas, an aggressive type of cancer in which malignant cells form in the skin. Melanoma accounts for only a small percentage of skin cancers, but causes most skin cancer deaths.

FLU SEASON OFFICIALLY OVER

As of May 2016, the New York State Commissioner of Health has officially declared influenza no longer prevalent in New York, based on the decreased number of confirmed cases documented in all five boroughs of New York City.

Consequently, Montefiore associates who have not been immunized are no longer required to wear masks in areas throughout the hospital. Vaccination of Montefiore associates increased to 88 percent this year, in compliance with the New York State Department of Health regulations. Thank you for your participation!

TRANSPLANT CARE COMES CLOSER TO HOME

MONTEFIORE IS DOING MORE TO PROVIDE ADVANCED CARE IN A FAMILIAR ENVIRONMENT FOR MORE PATIENTS.

The Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation provides access to multidisciplinary care for patients with kidney, pancreatic and liver diseases in the Bronx, Westchester County and New Jersey through its transplant evaluation service. The Center will soon expand its services to include Rockland County, in partnership with Nyack Hospital.

"This collaborative approach improves access and quality of care for very sick patients," says Milan Kinkhabwala, MD, Chief, Transplantation, Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation, and Professor, Surgery, Einstein. "By working in concert with patients' primary care doctors, specialists are able to identify patients in the earliest stages of disease."

The Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation partners with White Plains Hospital and St. John’s Riverside Hospital to offer comprehensive transplant evaluation services for residents of Westchester County. The Center for Transplantation also offers exceptional care for patients suffering from liver conditions at its office in Fairlawn, New Jersey and at the state-of-the-art Montefiore Hutchinson Campus.

NEWS

MONTEFIORE MARCHES WITH PRIDE

Montefiore associates, representing the Bronx and Westchester County, will join the LGBT community in the 2016 Pride March on Sunday, June 26 in Manhattan. Montefiore's participation is coordinated by the Umbrella Program, which is housed under the Montefiore's Adolescent AIDS program at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore, in collaboration with the Bronx Community Health Network/Cicero Program, the Center for Positive Living, the Departments of Medicine and Urology, the Division of Plastic Surgery and the Office of the President.

Montefiore’s expanding LGBTQ care program builds upon Montefiore’s longstanding reputation as a leader in population-based healthcare and a proponent of social justice, offering a broad range of leading-edge medical and psychosocial support services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning youth and their families. The Program also provides training for care providers and community organizations. For more information on LGBTQ care at Montefiore, visit montefiore.org/LGBTQcare.

SHOWERING NEW MOMS WITH EXPERT CARE

Montefiore Home Care and the Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) hosted an inaugural baby shower for expectant mothers. The two organizations are collaborating to establish an evidence-based program in which nurses visit eligible first-time mothers to improve pregnancy, child health and development outcomes. The program is just one of many Montefiore initiatives to promote community health and provide care for residents beyond the hospital walls.

The Montefiore Nurse-Family Partnership Team celebrates motherhood with clients and their babies.

EPIC@MONTEFIORE GO-LIVE

Montefiore associates are gearing up for the fifth Epic@Montefiore go-live beginning on June 10 at the Moses Campus, including the Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) and Montefiore Home Health. They'll join White Plains Hospital and various inpatient and outpatient facilities already using Epic. The integration of all patient records throughout the health system enables Montefiore associates to improve clinical collaboration using the centralized patient information now at their fingertips.

Register for training at an Epic Kiosk located in the lobby of Moses and CHAM, or the Wakefield cafeteria. Or you can fill out a training request form on the Epic@Montefiore intranet.

BRCA COMMUNITY STUDY

Roughly one in 40 Ashkenazi (Central/Eastern European) Jews will have a BRCA gene mutation that will put them and members of their families at an increased risk for certain cancers. Knowing your BRCA status can help guide your medical decisions.

Montefiore's genetics team, in collaboration with the Program for Jewish Genetic Health, is now offering subsidized BRCA testing as part of a research initiative exploring the benefits and challenges of bringing BRCA testing to the Jewish community at large.

Participants will:

  • Attend a group genetic counseling session in NYC, and provide a sample for BRCA testing.
  • Be responsible for a $100 fee for the testing and processing.
  • Receive testing results when they become available.
  • Be asked to complete short surveys over the course of the study.

Participants must be at least 25 years old, have at least one Ashkenazi Jewish grandparent and have not had BRCA testing done previously. Study eligibility also will depend on personal/ family cancer history.
