Movement Disorders Center

Our specialized team can help restore function and enable people to return to or maintain a full and active life.

The Montefiore Neurological Surgery Movement Disorders Center's team with industry-leading experts working together to deliver the most advanced and innovative neurosurgical care for patients who suffer from movement disorders. Our program's strength is how well the multidisciplinary team collaborates for our patients, promoting an environment that encourages positive health outcomes.

The management of movement disorders is a multidisciplinary effort among specialists in neurosurgery, neurology and psychology.
Leading Surgeons

Our team has a number of noteworthy surgeons, including Dr. Emad Eskandar, MD, a world-renowned authority on deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease and dystonia. Dr. Eskandar has performed procedures for more than 1,000 patients and has published extensively on the topic.

Innovative Treatments

Montefiore has developed several effective neurosurgical treatments for movement disorders. By improving our understanding of both basal ganglia circuitry and evolving neurosurgical techniques, we have contributed greatly to how treatment is approached in our center and in care facilities around the world. With each discovery, we will move closer to fully restoring function for patients with Parkinson’s disease, dystonia or tremors.

Surgical Targets

Currently, there are three surgical target areas in the brain for the treatment of movement disorders—the globus pallidus internus (GPi), the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the ventralis intermedius nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus. Treatments can include the placement of a deep brain stimulating (DBS) electrode or creating small lesions with minimally invasive surgical technology.

World-Renowned Specialists

The Montefiore Movement Disorders Center leverages a multidisciplinary collaboration of talented physicians, surgeons, nurses and other specialists to help understand and successfully treat patients. Our program is built around our highly skilled team.
