Residency

Welcome to the Residency Program at the Department of Neurological Surgery at Montefiore and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Our faculty of nationally and internationally recognized neurosurgeons spans the entire spectrum of neurological disease and surgeries. We perform more than 1,500 surgeries and procedures each year. The program is expanding considerably and the number and variety of cases is rapidly increasing. The philosophical foundation of our training program centers on the commitment of the faculty to foster and develop the careers of our residents. This constitutes a major strength of the Montefiore experience and its neurosurgical training.

Residents finish the program with the skills, knowledge and confidence to pursue whatever field they choose. Our commitment to our residents continues beyond the training years, and the faculty continues to be a guiding influence on the careers of our graduates. Collectively, as a group of physicians, educators, scientists, nurses and residents, we are working together to excel in the care of neurosurgical patients and to produce the next generation of neurosurgeons.

The surgical training is broad and diverse, encompassing all aspects of neurosurgery, including neuro-oncology, cerebrovascular neurosurgery, spinal neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery and neurocritical care as well as functional and epilepsy surgery. Our educational program is, therefore, developed around a comprehensive surgical and educational curriculum. Educational elements include neurosurgery grand rounds; neuro-oncology, vascular and spine conferences; journal clubs; cadaveric courses; and interdisciplinary specialty conferences in both the clinical and basic neurosciences.

The operative training is based on a groundbreaking approach to the training of residents in the operating room, using innovative educational software technology and training modalities that allow for a standardized methodology to help identify individual strengths and weaknesses. From this standardized platform, we can design individualized training modules that optimize surgical training to meet the required educational standards while also catering to individual strengths and interests.

Thank you for your interest in the Neurosurgical Residency Program at Montefiore Medical Center. We look forward to contributing to your success, and we strongly believe that our training program can provide you with the tools to facilitate attaining your goal of becoming a leader in neurosurgery.
