The Link Between COVID-19 and Stroke

The link between COVID-19 and stroke is now an important research area at Montefiore-Einstein’s Center for Comprehensive Stroke Care and other institutions around the country. Looking at inpatient data gathered during the first six weeks of the pandemic, we documented more than 60 strokes among roughly 5,000 COVID-19 patients at Montefiore-Einstein. Though not a large percentage, it quickly became clear that COVID-19 patients who have a stroke are about five times more likely to die. Stroke patients also exhibit some unusual symptoms when COVID-19 is present, and some features of these strokes are not typical. Read More to find out what we’ve learned and how to stay healthy.

CNBC’s Sharon Epperson Raises Awareness about Brain Aneurysms on Capitol Hill

An excruciatingly painful headache led CNBC’s Sharon Epperson to the emergency room at Montefiore’s White Plains Hospital where a brain scan revealed that she had a ruptured brain aneurysm. She was transferred to Montefiore’s Moses Campus where a surgery saved her life.

Now Sharon Epperson and Janet McHenry, NP, who was on Ms. Epperson’s care team at Montefiore, are on Capitol Hill raising awareness about brain aneurysms. They joined a delegation of more than 100 survivors, advocates and medical professionals, in conjunction with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, to educate lawmakers on brain aneurysm disease.

Montefiore Receives Joint Commission Accreditation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center

The Department of Neurological Surgery is excited to be an integral part of the Comprehensive Stroke Center, located on Montefiore's Moses Campus. This certified Center has received certification that is typically awarded only to 160 out of 6,000 hospitals nationwide.

This accreditation specifies that the center provides state-of-the-art care for all neurovascular conditions, including stroke, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), while following the most current treatment guidelines and achieving outstanding outcomes.
