Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI is a painless procedure that uses powerful magnets to create high-quality pictures of organs and specific areas inside the body. During this procedure, patients are not exposed to radiation.

Because MRI uses magnets to create images, patients with pacemakers and other implanted devices can not undergo this procedure. MRI differs importantly from CT scans in that there is no exposure to radiation. Doctors use MRI to detect the following:

  • Blood vessel diseases
  • Tumors and infections
  • Sport-related injuries (such as strains and tears of the ligaments, tendons and muscles)
  • Heart conditions
  • Nervous system disorders

Montefiore offers the following MRIs:

  • Abdominal and pelvic MRI
  • Breast MRI
  • Brain MRI
  • Chest MRI
  • Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)
  • Musculoskeletal MRI
