Vascular and Interventional Radiology Fellowship
Jacob Cynamon, MD
The Vascular and Interventional Radiology Fellowship Program at Montefiore offers two, one-year fellowship positions that cover a broad range of vascular and nonvascular diagnostic and interventional procedures. The ACGME-accredited program is based at the Moses Campus.
An unusually close working relationship with the clinical services at Montefiore, including vascular surgery, urology, gastroenterology and general surgery, helps provide a rich experience. In addition to the excellent clinical material, VIR divisional, departmental and interdepartmental didactic and case conferences enhance the fellowship experience.
As the fellow gains more experience, he or she also plays an increasingly active role in teaching radiology residents.
VIR Fellowship Experience at Montefiore
The day generally begins at 7:30 am, with work rounds on the patient floors, and usually concludes around 6 pm, often with a film review session. Weekly and monthly conferences include these:
- Vascular surgery Grand Rounds
- Angiography didactic and case conferences
- Angiography journal club, basic principles of vascular
- Interventional radiology and quality assurance
The fellows are on call on average one out of three weeks, always with attending staff as backup.
Cardiovascular diagnosis and intervention are emphasized, plus transcatheter thrombolysis, embolization, intravascular stents, IVC filter placements and TIPS procedures are also performed routinely. Fellows are also responsible for nonvascular interventional procedures (e.g., biliary drainage and stents, percutaneous nephrostomy, ureteral stents and abscess drainage). The Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology also has assumed responsibility for peripheral MR and CT angiography. Fellows will have the chance to take part in Montefiore's stent graft program. There is also ample opportunity for research and publication.
