MONTEFIORE'S SCHAFFER EXTENDED CARE CENTER ONE OF NEWSWEEK'S BEST NURSING HOMES 2020
Congratulations are due for Schaffer Extended Care Center at Montefiore New Rochelle for gaining a spot in Newsweek's inaugural Best Nursing Homes 2020 list. Newsweek set out to recognize outstanding senior care organizations dedicated to excellence in residential care, with the final list spanning 20 states. The high-level designation and rankings are based upon recommendations from medical experts including physicians, nurses, therapists and administrators, along with performance-based data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in three domains. CMS ranks health inspections, staffing ratios per resident per day, and quality of resident care measures kept in a national database. "We are proud to be recognized for the exceptional care we provide to our residents every single day," says John Mastronardi, Administrator, Montefiore Schaffer Extended Care Center.

DISASTER SIMULATION KEEPS LEVEL OF PREPAREDNESS HIGH ACROSS MONTEFIORE
The Montefiore Einstein Center for Innovation in Simulation (MECIS) hosted a disaster simulation program to enhance preparedness of emergency department (ED) staff for a mass casualty event. The eight-hour program was attended by ED physicians and nurses from across the Montefiore Health System. Live actors, as well as mannequins that breathe and bleed, contributed to realistic scenarios of an active shooter incident and a building collapse. Staff initiated an incident command and triaged a surge of patients. "Our hope is that the participants gained increased knowledge that they can take back to their own hospitals to enhance their emergency preparedness," remarks Jared Shapiro, Senior Director, Environmental Health and Safety, Montefiore. "Montefiore is prepared and ready to respond to any disaster that we face, but high-fidelity simulation increases our capacity to ensure the best possible response and outcomes," says Shapiro.
