"The mammogram continues to be the gold standard of screening for lifesaving early detection, and mammography is evolving with new technologies enhancing both comfort and precision. Today, 3D mammography finds more cancers and delivers more accurate results, meaning fewer recalls for additional tests," says Sheldon Feldman, MD, Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology and Director of Breast Cancer Services at Montefiore. On the horizon is contrast-enhanced spectral mammography, which reveals abnormalities even more clearly. Genetic and molecular testing to identify the specific type(s) of cancer present or likely to develop continues to evolve as well. Risk-adapted screening can now tailor recommendations for women at high risk, who need screening that goes beyond the basic mammogram, and women at low risk, who can have mammograms less frequently with good results. Each woman can decide with her doctor when and how often to be screened for breast cancer.

The Breast Cancer Program at the NCIdesignated Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care meets the exacting standards of the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, signifying the highest quality comprehensive care. Our research breakthroughs continue to lead game-changing cancer treatment practices, such as the landmark TAILORx study led by Montefiore's Dr. Joseph Sparano, which established that up to 70 percent of women with early-stage breast cancer can forgo chemotherapy. With our new Breast Center due to open in 2020, Montefiore continues to lead with lifesaving screening, precise diagnosis and groundbreaking treatments taking breast cancer care to a new level, in a beautiful environment.

City & State New York named Steven M. Safyer, MD, President and CEO, Montefiore Medicine, to this year's Bronx Power 100 list. Dr. Safyer was honored for his four decades of leadership at Montefiore, one of the borough's largest employers and healthcare providers, and his social justice work in HIV reform at Rikers Island. The evening gala in Riverdale included a keynote by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., who once said, "When Safyer speaks, people listen."
