BRINGING TOGETHER EXPERTS TO ADVANCE 50 YEARS OF OPIOID USE DISORDER INNOVATION
Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine leaders shared research and new strategies at their conference, "On the Front Lines of the Opioid Epidemic." The conference highlighted Einstein and Montefiore's leadership in the field of opioid use disorder, from basic and clinical research to progressive community care and outreach services.
Montefiore and Einstein brought together addiction experts, clinical leaders, community advocates, city and state officials, and policymakers. It also marked the 50th anniversary of Montefiore and Einstein's Division of Substance Abuse (DoSA), and honored Joyce Lowinson, MD, the widely published and pioneering founding director of DoSA.
Montefiore's innovative models of comprehensive integrated care and harm reduction were presented, along with emerging strategies for prevention of opioid use disorder and Einstein's neurobiology of addiction research. Montefiore and Einstein speakers were joined by invited guests including Michael Botticelli, former director of the White House National Office of Drug Control Policy; Mary Jeanne Kreek, MD, Rockefeller University; Hillary Kunins, MD, MPH, MS, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and Marc Gourevitch, MD, MPH, New York University. Clinical and research presentations were complemented by patient narratives, artwork and panel discussions.
"We have made tremendous progress in understanding that addiction is a brain disease and that the best way to reach people in danger is at the community level, through programs like these," said Steven M. Safyer, President and CEO, Montefiore Medicine.
