WAKEFIELD TOPS RANKING FOR NEWBORN SCREENING
 |
The Wakefield Campus was ranked first out of 124 New York State hospitals in four newborn screening measures for the month of April. Wakefield NICU and newborn nurseries achieved perfect scores on all four measures, placing them at the top of the rankings. Timely and accurate collection of specimens improves care and can save lives. The screening measures ranked include improving newborn screen collection in under 36 hours, decreasing newborn screen missing data and decreasing newborn screen unsuitable specimens. "This was accomplished through multidisciplinary quality improvement efforts and lots of hard work from our NICU and newborn nursery staff," says Michael L. Rinke, MD, PhD, Medical Director, Pediatric Quality, and Associate Professor, Pediatrics, Children's Hospital at Montefiore. "We have made newborn screening a priority, and our efforts have paid off," says Sheri Nemerofsky, MD, Associate Professor, Pediatrics, Einstein, and Director of Newborn Services, Wakefield. "With 124 New York State hospitals reporting monthly on newborn screening measures, there are often large fluctuations in placement, so it is especially gratifying that Montefiore earned a perfect score for one of the reporting months for four of the metrics measured."
