GETTING COVERED: TEAMING WITH NEW YORK STATE OF HEALTH TO BOOST HEALTH INSURANCE ACCESS

getting-covered-c.jpg

Montefiore has teamed up with New York State of Health (NYSOH) to assist people in the communities we serve to sign up for health insurance plans in the Affordable Care Act marketplace. Health insurance coverage is vital, and as part of our mission to serve, Montefiore's Community Relations Department is ready to help. We've set up sites throughout the health system to facilitate enrollment for, but not limited to, the NYSOH Essential Plan. This very low-cost plan fits the needs of many who don't place for Medicaid or other plan eligibility. Working with NYSOH's qualified health insurance navigators, Montefiore has hosted enrollment events at various Montefiore locations since October and will continue through the enrollment deadline of January 31, 2019. Navigators provide information on marketplace plans and assist Montefiore patients as well as others to find a plan that best meets their needs. In addition to navigators, a Montefiore representative is available to connect patients with our primary healthcare centers or other specialty services.

The next sign-up event is December 17, 2018, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Montefiore Mount Vernon, 12 North Seventh Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York 10550. For more information, visit https://www.montefiore.org/ocphevents

GOVERNOR NAMES DR. MATTHEW AKIYAMA TO HEPATITIS C ELIMINATION TASK FORCE

Governor Andrew Cuomo selected Matthew Akiyama, MD, Assistant Professor, Medicine (General Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases), to serve on the new Hepatitis C Elimination Task Force. The group will advise the state on how to end this "silent" epidemic through increasing access to medication and expanding programs that provide prevention, screening and treatment. This disease of the liver, if untreated, can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure, resulting in liver transplant, liver cancer or death. Prior to Dr. Akiyama's appointment to the Governor's task force, he was the recipient of an important award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institutes of Health to develop and test innovative strategies to improve linkage to and retention in HCV treatment among individuals recently released from jail. In July, Dr. Akiyama and a group of Montefiore clinicians in the Departments of Medicine and Pathology partnered with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to host the 2018 New York City Viral Hepatitis Research Symposium, "Equity in Prevention and Treatment."

FINAL REMINDER: TIME TO TAKE 2018 ANNUAL REVIEW

All Montefiore associates hired prior to 2018 are required to complete the 2018 Annual Review immediately to remain in compliance. Attending providers should have received the document via email and do not need to take further action. All others must complete the Annual Review online via Talent Management. Most associates were assigned the Annual Review, so it will appear on their "To Do" list as a requirement. Associates will need to select either the Clinical or Non-clinical version.

If you require further assistance with the Annual Review, contact the Learning Network at LearningNetwork@montefiore.org or 718-920-8787.

The program enhances our LINCS (Linking Individual Needs of Children with Services) Complex Care Program, which provides comprehensive care to children living at home with multiple chronic medical conditions or who rely on medical technologies. Montefiore has worked with Reach Out and Read since 1998, providing more than 421,000 books to children in our community. Reach Out and Read promotes early literacy for young children by incorporating books into pediatric visits and providing guidance to parents on how to read aloud to children.
