Montefiore Medical Center's Electrodiagnostic Service Receives Highest Level of National Accrediation

Rehabilitation Medicine Department Achieves Exemplary Status;
One of Only Seven Area Hospitals Accredited
NEW YORK, NY (November 13, 2012) – The Electrodiagnostic Service in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center has achieved accreditation with exemplary status, the highest level possible, from the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM). Montefiore is one of seven New York area hospitals to have met 32 criteria required for accreditation through the voluntary, peer-reviewed process of AANEM’s Electrodiagnostic Laboratory Accreditation Program.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Electrodiagnostic Service physicians conduct tests to measure nerve and muscle function and identify problems associated with the neuromuscular system. The two main tests are a nerve conduction study, which uses a weak electrical current to measure the size and speed of the response of the nerves, and a needle electromyography study, which records the electrical activity of muscles. These studies usually are requested by referring physicians to identify causes of radiating pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, fatigue and muscle cramping.
Study results can diagnose conditions ranging from carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). After diagnosis, physicians at Montefiore’s Electrodiagnostic Service offer guidance and advice on the best treatment for each patient, such as physical and occupational therapy or, in extreme cases, surgery.
“Achieving this accreditation attests to the comprehensive testing capabilities and quality service provided by our top-class faculty,” said Mark Thomas, M.D., chairman of the physical medicine and rehabilitation department. “We are thrilled to be recognized for our high-quality performance and professionalism.”
Se Won Lee M.D., attending physician, director of the electrodiagnostic service in the physical medicine and rehabilitation department at Montefiore Medical Center coordinates a team of five physicians who are all certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. They are Dennis Kim, M.D., Sihka Guha, M.D., Eathar Saad, M.D., Yumei Wang, M.D., and Yuxi Chen, M.D.
