Only Health System Recognized for Innovative Efforts Benefiting Multi-Generational Workforce

NEW YORK (February 7, 2014) – Montefiore Medical Center last night was recognized by The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) as an inaugural Age Smart Employer Award winner. Of the four honorees, Montefiore is the only health system to be included in this first-of-its-kind award that recognizes New York City employers who value workers of all ages and serve as leaders in leveraging the talents of older workers for enhanced business success. 

Adults aged 55 and older are the fastest growing segment of the workforce in the United States. Due to increasing life expectancies and health advancements, many older adults desire to stay in the workforce well past the typical age of retirement. The aging workforce presents unique opportunities for employers who can benefit from the expertise and experience of older workers. Research shows that investing in employees results in an engaged workforce, improved teamwork, better retention, and employees that are in full support and alignment of an organization's mission.   

 "This award recognizes a fundamental part of our culture – that each employee, young or old, new or experienced, can make a meaningful contribution to Montefiore and provide the best care to our patients and their communities," said Alfredo Cabrera, senior vice president & chief human resources officer, Montefiore. "This is truly an honor."

A panel of business and civic leaders representing key industries in New York City determined the winners of the Age Smart Employer Award. Montefiore was given high honors for its recruitment, retention and development practices that have built a high-performance workforce of eight generations of employees working side by side. Montefiore also was recognized for its investment in late career employees through programs including a Leadership Development Academy offering seasoned leaders the opportunity to advance their skills in targeted education courses, formalized mentoring and coaching partnerships, and career counseling workshops.

Judges also noted Montefiore's commitment to long-tenured associates, including the 25 Year Club that recognizes those with 25 years of service. Inductees are members for life and meet annually with executive leadership for a celebration of their dedication. The 25 Year Club now boasts more than 3,000 members. Additionally, when Montefiore associates retire, they are offered the opportunity to become involved in a special volunteer network so they can remain an integral part of the community.
