Montefiore Recognized by Nation’s Largest LGBTQ Civil Rights Organization

NEW YORK  – Montefiore has been designated as a “LGBTQ Health Care Equality Leader,” for going beyond the basics when it comes to LGBTQ patient care and an inclusive workplace environment for associates.

The designation was awarded by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), in the 12th edition of their Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), which assesses participants on four criteria: Non-Discrimination and Staff Training, Patient Services and Support, Employee Benefits and Policies, and Patient and Community Engagement.

“HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index is used by the LGBTQ community to find healthcare aligned with their individual needs so this honor means a lot,” said Alana Murphy, Organizational Change Management Consultant and Program Chair to the Healthcare Equality Index for the Human Rights Campaign at Montefiore. “We are proud that our commitment to equity and inclusion is being recognized by the nation’s largest LGBTQ civil rights organization.”

Along with being the first health system to participate in the NYC Pride March, Montefiore has established many programs and training opportunities to address the LGBTQ community’s needs and help employees understand LGBTQ terminology, gender identities and sexual orientation. Notably, Montefiore is the largest single-site HIV care program in New York State, and has been on the forefront of HIV/AIDS care for youth for over 30 years, providing mental health care and support services, as well as Trans* care and primary care for LGBTQ youth, ages 13-24.

“Every day, we focus on caring for each patient and associate with respect.  We are happy our efforts have been recognized by the HRC as one of the top healthcare leaders in LGBTQ equality.”said  Ms. Murphy.
