Montefiore Medical Center has completely refurbished and expanded one of its main radiology centers, doubling the capacity of its very high-in-demand MRI services with an ultra modern 3-Tesla scanner that is used for very sophisticated MRI procedures, providing extremely high-resolution images that improve diagnosis and treatment.

“By adding this state-of-the art 3-Tesla scanner to the 1.5-Tesla machine already in use, we will be able to double our MRI capacity and cut waiting time for brain scans from three weeks to a matter of days,” said Stephen Amis, MD, chairman, Department of Radiology at Montefiore.  “Also shortening waiting time are the addition of an ultra-fast, high resolution 64-slice CT scanner and increasing the number of Board Certified sub-specialty radiologists to interpret the scans.

“In this day and age, when imaging is such a critical component in diagnosing and following disease, we hope such an imaging center, featuring cutting-edge technology and closely located to the medical center, will be a major convenience to our patients and physicians,” Dr. Amis added.

Formerly called Gun Hill MRI, located at the corner of East Gun Hill Road and Wayne Avenue in the Norwood section of the Bronx, the newly-expanded 6,600 square foot facility, has been renamed Montefiore Advanced Imaging. It is located one block east of Montefiore’s Moses Campus.

Implementation of two other features at all Montefiore radiology sites also increase patient and physician convenience and improve diagnosis: Diagnostic imaging can now be accessed by a patient’s physician as soon as the exam is completed using a Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) connected through the internet thus eliminating cumbersome X-ray films; And patients may schedule the next available appointment at any site within the entire Montefiore radiology system using a universal phone number especially for them…1-866-662-9729.
