The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center is advancing the latest diagnostic and treatment options for heart patients as well as defining the future of heart care. Since Montefiore made headlines in 1958 as the first medical center to implant a pacemaker, Montefiore has remained at the forefront of cardiothoracic medicine. Not only are our surgeons academic leaders in their field but clinical pioneers utilizing cutting-edge technology such as the Da Vinci Surgical Robot.

Cardiac surgeons at Montefiore not only are experts in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, but they have led the way in the development of this rapidly expanding and exciting field. Our surgeons have published more scientific papers, abstracts and book chapters on cardiothoracic robotics than any other institution in the region.

Dr. Robert Michler, Chairman of Montefiore's Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department and co-Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care, was among the first surgeons in the United States to perform robotic heart surgery and his work expedited FDA approval of robotic mitral valve repair and coronary artery bypass surgery.

Dr. Joseph J. DeRose, Jr, Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Cardiac Surgery has also pioneered the application of the Da Vinci Surgical Robot performing the first Robotic Biventricular Pacemaker in the world in 2002. Dr. DeRose likewise participated in the first robotic atrial septal defect closure in the United States and the first robotic thymectomy in the United States for Myasthenia Gravis. He has trained over 25 centers in the United States in robotic cardiothoracic surgery since 2002.

Keenly aware that the latest medical developments are made during clinical trials, the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care is at the frontlines of cutting edge technology. Currently the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery is conducting clinical trials in:

  • The use of stem cells to rejuvenate heart muscle
  • Drugs to treat pulmonary hypertension
  • Valve sparing aortic surgery
