Professional Training Programs
The Department of Ophthalmology at Montefiore Medical Center, The University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, provides tertiary care to patients with diseases of the eye. The Department also provides extensive teaching and research in affiliated hospitals and medical settings including the Henkind Eye Institute, Wakefield Ophthalmology, the Kennedy Center for Research, the Center for Ophthalmic Innovation and the Price Center. Research activities in five important areas have been supported by major grants in the areas of information transfers between retinal cells, light transductions, resistance to retinal ischemia, cataractogenesis and antibiotic pharmacokinetics. The Office of Clinical Trials conducts investigator initiated and sponsored trials throughout the medical center, and allows our patients access to the most up to date innovative therapies.
As one of the largest medical residency programs in the country, Montefiore provides postgraduate clinical training to more than 1,400 residents across 150 accredited residency and fellowship programs. Within Ophthalmology, the Montefiore Residency program is in the top twenty percent in size in the country.
Montefiore's physicians, at the forefront of their fields, actively mentor and cultivate a new generation of leaders committed to healthcare that is both excellent and equitable. Residents and other healthcare professionals receive a unique opportunity for hands-on training in one of the most diverse urban areas in the country—one where the population is global, the disease burden is high, and the need is great.
Our progressive focus on comprehensive rather than fragmented care provides the ideal training ground for healthcare leaders of the future. To remain on the cutting-edge of training, we develop and expand programs that advance teamwork, communication and decision-making. These programs, coupled with Montefiore's mission and vision draw residents from top medical schools, who share our mission to take care of our very special population.
