Montefiore in the News

February 22, 2018

February 21, 2018—(BRONX, NY)—As reported earlier, investigators at Einstein and Montefiore secured $174 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in federal fiscal year 2017. Now, an analysis by Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research shows that Einstein ranks 7th in award dollars per investigator (28th in total funding) among the nation’s top medical schools.

Each year Blue Ridge releases its analysis of NIH funding, ranking medical schools and individual departments by total award dollars. For the first time this year, the site included the total number of principal investigators (PIs) at the 139 medical schools that receive NIH funding. Einstein’s top ten ranking was determined by dividing total award by number of PIs for the top 40 medical schools as determined by total NIH funding. (The top 40 institutions were those that received more than $120 million in 2017.) This places Einstein ahead of such medical schools as Columbia, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Harvard and Yale.

Blue Ridge also ranked departments by total awards, and several basic science and clinical departments at Einstein and Montefiore placed in the top twenty nationally, including anatomy/cell biology, which combines awards to Einstein’s anatomy & structural biology and cell biology departments (#6), family medicine (#11), genetics (#12), neurosciences (#13), urology (#16), pediatrics (#19) and public health (#20).

“Einstein has long been respected for the excellence and productivity of its faculty,” says Allen M. Spiegel, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein. “This clear and objective evidence is a welcome confirmation of that fact. We are immensely proud of our researchers and their chairs, as well as the students, trainees, fellows and staff who help make this achievement possible.”
