Having gone through her own cancer journey, Ruschell Boone knows just how important it is to have support. Especially from people who have gone through it themselves. Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center in the Bronx provides their patients with that support. They’ve created the free BOLD Cancer Wellness program, which includes giving a current patient a “buddy” who has gone through a similar experience.

On Wellness Monday, “News All Day” was joined by the founding director of the BOLD program, Dr. Alyson Moadel-Robblee, as well as Shirley Johnson, one of the volunteer buddies.

Moadel-Robblee says the program is a cancer wellness program for the Bronx to fill in the hole for patients going through “chemo, radiation and surgery but don’t have a place to go and feel comforted and loved."

She says they offer mind/body therapies, creative arts, and BOLD Buddies. The Buddies are cancer survivors themselves who volunteer to support others.

Johnson says she wanted to become a buddy because she wanted to make sure that her community “was able to go to a program or talk to an organization to help them get through cancer” and not feel alone in their journey.
