Ava L. Liberman, MD
Ava L. Liberman, MD, is Attending Physician at Montefiore and Assistant Professor of Neurology and Medicine/Neurocritical Care at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her clinical focus is on the treatment of patients with acute ischemic stroke, with a particular interest in cryptogenic stroke.
After receiving her Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 2005 and her Master of Arts in Philosophy from Stanford University in 2009, Dr. Liberman earned her Doctor of Medicine in 2010 from the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine. Her postgraduate training began at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with an internship in internal medicine in 2011, followed by a three-year residency in neurology there which she completed in 2014. She continued her postgraduate training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as a Vascular Neurology Clinical Fellow in 2015 and a National Institute of Health StrokeNet Fellow in 2016. She received a certificate in clinical research methods from Perelman School of Medicine University of Pennsylvania in 2016. In 2017, she completed a diagnostic safety fellowship with the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine.
Dr. Liberman’s research interests include acute stroke care, cerebral vein thrombosis, clinical decision making, diagnostic error and headache. She received a K23 career development award from the National Institute of Health in 2018 to study stroke misdiagnosis among patients who present emergently with nonspecific clinical symptoms including headache. Her work has been published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. She has also been invited to present her work regionally and nationally.
Dr. Liberman was awarded Neurology Teacher of the Year in 2017 from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center, and Jacobi Medical Center. She is board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology. She is a member of the American Heart Association, the American Academy of Neurology, and the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine.
