Laurie Bauman, PhD

Laurie J Bauman, PhD, a sociologist, is a tenured Professor of Pediatrics and has been Director of Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Preventive Intervention Research Center (PIRC) for over 20 years. Dr. Bauman oversees a staff of 10, including four faculty members. Her career has focused on conducting behavioral and social science intervention trials combined with qualitative research.

As Director of the Behavioral Science Core of the Einstein-Rockefeller-CUNY CFAR, Dr. Bauman builds cross-institutional relationships and provides consultations to faculty in three institutions to ensure excellence in behavioral research. She has been a member of the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies at Columbia University for over 15 years, and served as co-Director of the Global Community Core, and subsequently Director of the Intervention Science Core (ISC) of the HIV Center, where she advised on pre-intervention and intervention studies. The ISC was successful in integrating biomarkers into many Center studies for the first time, leading to the formation of the new Bio-Behavioral Core, which she will lead in the next HIV Center iteration.

In collaboration with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Dr. Bauman conducted a Bronx-wide study of barriers and facilitators of linkage to care in 24 HIV testing sites, and a study of engagement in HIV care in vulnerable populations, and she is currently conducting a study of provider attitudes toward PrEP.

She is managing Principal Investigator of a clinical trial funded by the National Institute of Mental Health that aims to overcome barriers to disseminating PrEP to high-risk populations. Dr. Bauman also has experience in pragmatic trials and implementation science, and she has developed interventions on site, under "usual-care" conditions (e.g., in schools, primary care, and emergency departments).

Almost all of Dr. Bauman's studies use mixed-methods designs, and she has experience conducting qualitative research.
