Department of Anesthesiology – Professional Training Programs – Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesia Rotations - New York City – Montefiore Medical Center

In the pain medicine and regional anesthesia rotations, residents work closely with faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology at Montefiore who are fellowship-trained in pain medicine, providing comprehensive services to help patients with acute or chronic pain.

Pain Medicine Service includes the Regional Anesthesia Service and also the Inpatient Pain Consultation and Follow up Service. Residents participate in inpatient consultations with multidisciplinary teams, interacting with neurologists and neurosurgeons, orthopedists and orthopedic surgeons, oncologists, physiatrists, nurse practitioners and nurses, among other professionals. Regional Anesthesia Service residents participate in performing procedures for post-operative pain. Currently, residents rotate at Beth Israel Medical Center in lower Manhattan for outpatient chronic pain consultations and interventional pain procedures.

Clinical Excellence, Extraordinary Opportunity

Residents in pain medicine and regional anesthesia acquire expertise in the use of anesthetic drugs, pain medications and interventions in both inpatient and outpatient care, addressing pain issues post-operatively and during recovery from conditions including stroke and other neurological illnesses, peripheral vascular disease, amputation and spinal cord injuries, cardiopulmonary disease, cancer-related disability, rheumatological disorders and functional loss following fractures or joint replacement surgery. The education in pain medicine and regional anesthesia that our residents receive prepares them to provide pain management for a variety of acute and chronic pain symptoms.

Superior Faculty

Residents are mentored by physicians working on the cutting edge of pain medicine and regional anesthesia. Our anesthesiology faculty comes from prestigious institutions around the world, and is distinguished by superior teaching skills and international professional recognition. Residents work in teams, collaborating closely with these exceptional specialists in devising individualized patient care plans.

Didactic and Research Curriculum

Hosting one of the largest residency programs in the U.S., Montefiore provides residents with a challenging and diverse didactic and clinical curriculum, including access to advancements in research and new technology in the specialized area of Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesia. The curriculum synthesizes didactic education, science and clinical practice, engaging residents in a variety of clinical and research opportunities.

Looking Ahead

The Outpatient Pain Center will open in the fall of 2011, providing anesthesiology residents with even more opportunities for involvement in pain management. Services offered at the Center will focus on interventional treatments for long-term pain relief in the form of catheter or injection therapies, enabling patients to return home more quickly and with more functionality. Such treatments include lumbar epidural steroid injections for spinal pain and Botox injections for spasticity and joint/bursal/tendon steroid injections for musculoskeletal or joint pain.
